One of my tricks for generating startup ideas is to imagine the ways in which we'll seem backward to future generations.
Frighteningly Ambitious Startup IdeasI'm admittedly more excited about knowledge for knowledge's sake- for how much "magic" this privilege opens up in my world- how I can see robots for their underlying algorithms, how I can sit in window seats while flying and truly appreciate control surface actuation, and how everyday objects dissolve into mathematical relationships- free body diagrams, fluid flow equations, & electromechanical transductions- transforming the physical world around me into a mirage of constituent systems and their fragile symphony.
Bloga specific and flawed answer gives me more to work with than a hazy and spotless one, and ultimately that’s what i need right now
ambition – A Slice of My MindSome of these men control funding for projects and enjoy high status in EA communities and that means there are real downsides to refusing their sexual advances and pressure to say yes, especially if your career is in an EA cause area or is funded by them.
Women and Effective Altruism · keerthanapgFrom experience, EA as a community, has very little respect for monogamy and many men, often competing with each other, will persuade you to join polyamory using LessWrong style jedi mindtricks while they stand to benefit from the erosion of your boundaries.
Women and Effective Altruism · keerthanapgAkin to how EA is an optimization of altruism with “suboptimal” human tendencies like morality and empathy stripped from it, red pill is an optimized sexual strategy with the humanity of women stripped from it.
Women and Effective Altruism · keerthanapgThe approach is based on biophysical principles in that far-UVC light can traverse and therefore inactivate bacteria and viruses which are typically micrometer dimensions or smaller, whereas due to its strong absorbance in biological materials, far-UVC light cannot penetrate even the outer dead-cell layers of human skin, nor the outer tear layer on the surface of the eye.
Far-UVC light: A new tool to control the spread of airborne-mediated microbial diseases | Scientific ReportsWhen your surroundings are uncertain it is the only loving, stable, place in the whole world.
internal confidence - by Nicole - startingfromnixSelf as home is a concept I think about a lot.
internal confidence - by Nicole - startingfromnixwe cannot live in a world that is not our own, in a world that is interpreted for us by others. An interpreted world is not a home.
internal confidence - by Nicole - startingfromnixerhaps the next generation of innovation and discoveries that advance society will be made through small squads banding together to build things, live together, and create something more intricate, comprehensive, and wonderful than any one individual could have achieved on their own.
Here's to the fools who dreamIllumina lowered its Full Genome Sequencing service to $5,000 per human genome, or $4,000 if ordering 50 or more.
Whole genome sequencingThe biggest barrier to rational thinking is organizing your mind such that it's safe to think. I still promote and admire "look towards the truth, even if it hurts", but I know see that if you don't spend enough resources on addressing that hurt, the hurt parts of yourself can and will take measures to protect themselves. Treat yourself well.
How to Ignore Your Emotions (while also thinking you're awesome at emotions) - LessWrong"Holy christ, mountain climbers do crazy shit. The human brain has the capacity to end up in a weird state where they pathologically need to get to the top of the biggest mountain, via an actively dangerous route. Geez. Am *I* crazy in some analogous way?"
Toni Kurz and the Insanity of Climbing Mountains - LessWrongThey understand the danger of climbing these mountains (especially those that haven't been climbed before). Reinhold Messner, one of the greatest climbers of all time, and the first to summit Everest without oxygen, explained that when he climbs, his mind tells him to go back, to not venture forth into the dark, cold and desolate winds. Yet he does.
Toni Kurz and the Insanity of Climbing Mountains - LessWrongWith night having fallen, the guides realized they would likely die attempting to climb the ice face and rescue Toni from above. They promised Toni they would return the next morning for another rescue attempt.
Toni Kurz and the Insanity of Climbing Mountains - LessWrongA meta-analysis of 23 studies found that at the individual level, intelligence has no relationship with happiness. Knowing the IQ of two random people in the same country tells you nothing about whether one is happier than the other. But knowing something about their moral character will tell you something.
For Happiness, Moral Character is More Important Than Intelligence or MoneyThey go on to suggest that it is important to understand the difference between intuitive ideas about happiness compared with how psychologists define happiness.
For Happiness, Moral Character is More Important Than Intelligence or MoneyTractability refers to how solvable the problem is. Inventing a perpetual motion machine would radically improve general welfare, but it’s a completely intractable problem, so it’s not worth wasting resources on.
Effective Altruism: A Framework for Prioritising Causes - Think Inc.Also probabilities on scenarios in many contexts can be somewhat problematic, and the methodologies used to come up with very high xrisk values for AGI vs other xrisks have very high uncertainties.
Longtermists Should Work on AI - There is No "AI Neutral" Scenario - EA Forumcatastrophic risks don't just involve massive immediate suffering. They drastically change global circumstances in a way which will have knock-on effects on whether, when, and how we build AGI.
Longtermists Should Work on AI - There is No "AI Neutral" Scenario - EA ForumReducing the chance that we all die before building AGI increases the chance that we build AGI
Longtermists Should Work on AI - There is No "AI Neutral" Scenario - EA Forum3 times more likely to go extinct
Longtermists Should Work on AI - There is No "AI Neutral" Scenario - EA Forumsince the most important cause is uncertain, we should divide our resources between many plausibly-important causes.
Longtermists Should Work on AI - There is No "AI Neutral" Scenario - EA ForumIn a world that had overcome extreme poverty and other major problems that face us now, promoting the arts would be a worthy goal. In the world in which we live, however, for reasons that will be explored in chapter 11, donating to opera houses and museums isn’t likely to be doing the most good you can.
Notes on Effective Altruismnd the reason many people are bothered by EA is not that they think it's a bad idea to "do good better". But rather that they doubt the ability of EA institutions and community to live up to the aspirations.
Notes on Effective Altruismaccepts the basic ideas of EA, while disagreeing with particular instantiations.
Notes on Effective AltruismIn this sense, EA has a huge surface area which can only be improved by critique, not weakened.
Notes on Effective AltruismMoral reasoning, if taken seriously and acted upon, is of the utmost concern, in part because there is a danger of terrible mistakes
Notes on Effective AltruismAt a minimum, vaccine developers can get a prototype vaccine all the way through Phase 2 studies, where they can show that the human immune system does respond to a vaccine and make sure the vaccine is safe, without needing a pathogen.

The Most Precious Resource is Agency - by Simon SarrisThe system consists of a relatively inexpensive, disposable, single use cassette and a durable analyzer
An integrated, self-contained microfluidic cassette for isolation, amplification, and detection of nucleic acids | SpringerLinkportable analyzer controls all the tasks performed in the cassette, including fluid pumping and valving, thermal cycling, and signal scanning, reading, and analysis, but the analyzer is not disposable
An integrated, self-contained microfluidic cassette for isolation, amplification, and detection of nucleic acids | SpringerLinkOther reviews covering the topic of viral infection in conjunction with microfluidics are devoted to single virus diagnoses including sample preparation, and detection methods such as Ebola (Coarsey et al., 2017), dengue fever (DENV) (Darwish et al., 2018), hepatitis (Duchesne and Lacombe, 2018) and HIV (Mauk et al., 2017).

Rice is one of the major crops grown and consumed in rainfed areas, and rainfed cultivation accounts for about 25% of global rice production

Heat waves: a hot topic in climate change research | SpringerLinkZoonotic diseases are often originated and carried in wildlife or livestock; thus, the emergence of such diseases generally occurs in phases, starting with a series of spillover events, followed by multiple small outbreaks, and subsequent adaptation
