To avoid this, it will be essential to introduce support for demand or rebate mechanisms for producers that face higher input costs. A successful d e - risking strategy will require a comprehensive approach to value chains that works in service of downstream manufacturing —

Potential cost increases of steel, aluminum, copper, timber, and cement could also impact the build-out of power and gas infrastructure in the context of rising construction material costs, which have already jumped 40% over the past five years.
AI infrastructure gaps | Deloitte Insights
AI data centers uniquely challenge grid operations because they can create large, concentrated clusters of 24/7 power demand.

power availability blocks deployment at 40%, compared with 24% for enterprises.
Land. Power. Compute - CUDO Compute
Very little of the world’s available acreage can actually support an AI workload at scale. A viable site must simultaneously offer grid access with sufficient capacity, cooling and water feasibility, resilient fibre connectivity, regulatory certainty, room for expansion, and a low risk of natural disasters.
Land. Power. Compute - CUDO Compute
In deregulated electricity markets, the grid operator is responsible for approving a connection request but is not responsible for ensuring that sufficient power generation capacity is built to meet that new demand.
Global energy demands within the AI regulatory landscape | Brookings
many electrical grids were designed and built decades ago for a centralized, one-way flow of power from large fossil fuel plants to distributed customers.
Global energy demands within the AI regulatory landscape | Brookings
the average wait time for a new large-scale grid connection is now between seven and 10 years
Global energy demands within the AI regulatory landscape | Brookings
Before a data center can use electricity, it must apply to the grid operator for an interconnection agreement, which often triggers any needed upgrades to transmission lines or substations, before connecting to the transmission network.
Global energy demands within the AI regulatory landscape | Brookings
Grid capacity in these more mature markets is often at or near its limit, with land for new large-scale development becoming scarce and expensive and regulators imposing stricter controls.
Global energy demands within the AI regulatory landscape | Brookings
About 60% of the electricity used in data centers powers the servers
Global energy demands within the AI regulatory landscape | Brookings
This share reaches around 75% for larger hyperscaler data centers optimized for AI workloads
Global energy demands within the AI regulatory landscape | Brookings
the energy consumption of data centers could approach 1,050 TWh by 2026, which, if data centers were a country, would make them the fifth largest energy consumer in the world, between Japan and Russia

Owners and operators are increasingly moving beyond traditional hubs such as Northern Virginia’s “Data Center Alley” in search of abundant energy. Markets including Wyoming and the Permian Basin in Texas are emerging as new data center destinations because of their energy resources.

Instead, these companies will build, bring, or buy the new generation resources and electricity needed to satisfy their energy demands, and pay for all new power delivery infrastructure upgrades to service their data centers.
Beyond the Hype: Assessing Hyperscaler Nuclear Commitments Against U.S. Energy Realities | Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
Some technology companies are not waiting for grid expansion. Microsoft, Amazon, and other hyperscalers have sought or received permits to build gas generation directly at data center sites in multiple states

direct partnership deals have been varied and the details opaque, but they can generally be considered venture capital moves, allowing hyperscalers to take a stake in future opportunities as new nuclear options become available

Hyperscalers are investing directly in new generation assets, signing long-term renewable PPAs, and in some cases funding transmission upgrades themselves. But the timeline mismatch between construction completions in 2026 and 2027 and power availability cannot be wished away.
