Tao makes several leaps and suggestions himself. He almost never takes the model’s advice about where to go next
LLMs reward expertiseWriting down thoughts turns them from ephemeral musings to intellectual scaffolding which can be used to build beautiful things; exposes them to the light of the world, and only then can they bear real fruit.
The Nature of Freedom — Willow Lianait’s also really important that we carefully discern what actually leads to robustly reproducible improvements in baseline wellbeing
advanced meditators have many surprising empirical claims about how to feel deeply okaysomething doesn’t have to be true scientifically for it to be useful for you.
Practice As The Bar For Truth - CommoncogYou apply something to your life and if it works, it’s true. You get to skip over some of the up-front analysis you might otherwise need to do. You don’t allow yourself the luxury of debate.
Practice As The Bar For Truth - CommoncogI still believe in exploration, whether that means diving into new fields of knowledge, flooding your brain with neurotransmitters, or having first dates that require passports. These experiences give you magic eyes and allow you to see things in new ways. Jiro’s eyes allow him to appreciate the mechanical beauty of the Ghibli engine, a falcon’s eyes let it glide using the vortexes of the wind, and Shulgin’s eyes allow him to notice the beauty of a woodpile.
Everything is FertileI’ve never felt any desire to follow them. I write this as I eat the same Chipotle burrito that has been my weekly staple for the last six years, in the same chair behind the same computer on the same desk in a different room in a different city.
The inner world - by sid - cybermonkThe feeling of inauthenticity, especially at the beginning, is inherent to the process of aspiration. It looks and feels inauthentic because, in a sense, it is inauthentic.
Ideas I’ll remember from “Aspiration” by Agnes CallardA King must rule his Kingdom as King, for the expressed purpose of not sacrificing the Essence and Heart of his creation.
Truth In The World Of Business – Siddha PerformanceSolitude was the default, and diversion was the exception. Today that’s inverted. Distraction is the default, and solitude is the exception you have to fight for.
Pascal would have thrown away his iPhone - by JA Westenbergwhen we confront our own mortality and smallness, we feel a terrifying emptiness
Pascal would have thrown away his iPhone - by JA WestenbergBefore you practice, you have no idea what your post-practice experience will be like. It is an unknowable thing that only rewiring your brain and body gives you access to.
Practice - nihalsahu.netcoping mechanisms that hamper you in adulthood tended to be survival mechanisms in childhood.
sometimes you get stuck in a sinkhole for a few yearsPeople’s problems are generally created by their approaches, which is why trying harder tends to just drive them in deeper.
sometimes you get stuck in a sinkhole for a few yearswe realised that Minecraft - through the affordances of ‘note blocks’ and ‘redstone’ - afforded learners some truly playful ways to approach the creation of tones and simple musical compositions
the Prescient Program - what the intuitions of novices look like, and why we should careby designing environments in which their nascent and emerging intuitions are still malleable.
the Prescient Program - what the intuitions of novices look like, and why we should careThe intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.
Intuition Is the Highest Form of Intelligence — Kasanoff.comMy "gut instinct" is to say yes, especially when we are talking about people who are already intellectually curious, rigorous in their pursuit of knowledge, and willing to challenge their own assumptions.
Intuition Is the Highest Form of Intelligence — Kasanoff.com“‘Good taste' is simply to have a well formed opinion, in accordance with the realities of the Good and the True.”
Notes on “Taste” | Are.na Editorialtomorrow-you might not remember what today-you intended
compelling projects - by visakan veerasamyThe noisier and angrier info streams get, the more BI beats II
vgr: The Twitter Years (2007–22) | 7. Boundary IntelligenceBasically, better input plus mediocre IQ beats bad input and genius IQ every time, so boundary intelligence is leverage
vgr: The Twitter Years (2007–22) | 7. Boundary Intelligence5/ Boundary intelligence is by defn meta, since you're tuning your filters and making choices about what to even let hit your attention
vgr: The Twitter Years (2007–22) | 7. Boundary IntelligenceIt’s probably a permanent state — taste isn’t often outgrown.
Notes on “Taste” | Are.na Editorialrunning from the question of whether any of it was what I wanted, or what I'd been told to want.
Why I quit "The Strive"This has been a relief. As much as I love to write and communicate, I find myself wary of being too public about what I'm doing and thinking. It starts to quickly feel performative, not who I am. To be able to immerse myself in a project deeply with only my closest collaborators and friends knowing what's going on, suits my nature much more.
Building in privateA productive treatment for maladaptive behaviour is just more reps at acting how you’d prefer.
Practice - nihalsahu.netBy giving each subagent an isolated worktree, multiple subagents can process and write to memory concurrently, then merge their changes back through git-based conflict resolution.
Introducing Context Repositories: Git-based Memory for Coding Agents | Lettagiving the agent a local copy of its memory that stays in sync regardless of where the client is running
Introducing Context Repositories: Git-based Memory for Coding Agents | LettaThe amount of serendipity that will occur in your life, your Luck Surface Area, is directly proportional to the degree to which you do something you're passionate about combined with the total number of people to whom this is effectively communicated.
Codus OperandiWhen you’ve got instant access to infinite information, you need someone to show you where to start.
Underrated ways to change the world - by Adam MastroianniIf we can unlock it and send it where it needs to go, we can turn it into friendships, marriages, businesses, and unlikely psychologists.
Underrated ways to change the world - by Adam MastroianniI found myself stressing and worrying about how tasks were being captured and organised more so than doing the actual work.
How to Get Things Done - by James BedfordI simply decide to do it at some point this week, and if it isn’t going to be finished this week then I don’t think about it at all.
How to Get Things Done - by James BedfordNothing stuck. I built systems and flows in these tools each time hopeful that this was going to be the thing that let my stay on top of all of the mountain of work that was piling up on me, but none of them lasted more than a few days.
How to Get Things Done - by James BedfordThis demonstrates clearly that the more you do and the more people you tell about it, the larger your Luck Surface Area will become.
Codus OperandiI think a failure mode of writing is using how to write to delay the act itself. Think of a person who spends half a Saturday researching blogging platforms rather than, you know, blogging.
How I Built This BlogDifferent focal spots corresponded to different smells, which we’ve replicated first-try on two people and validated with a blind trial.
We Induced Smells With UltrasoundMistaken attitudes toward meaning create unnecessary psychological/spiritual/existential suffering.
Table of contents | MeaningnessOthers will always be smarter; but there are always ways to position yourself better regardless. Either you do an overlap of two things really well, or you are in domain X but care about and do unusual thing Y that really accelerates you or whatever
Conviction is the Scarcest Resource: Dialogues About Convictionthe goal is to accumulate max social capital + technical capital that can all be converted to financial capital anytime, but u cant go the other way
Conviction is the Scarcest Resource: Dialogues About ConvictionIf you wish to not get stuck, seek to perceive what you have not yet perceived.
Reality has a surprising amount of detailwhere am I maximally leveraged and maximally having fun
Conviction is the Scarcest Resource: Dialogues About Convictiondriven by true intellectual curiosity, not grades, certificates, money, or grad school admissions. I met crazy ambitious student after student over the next few years – a Canadian fusion founder who taught himself plasma physics on OCW, a self-driving vehicle builder who learned machine learning online, a friend building brain-computer interfaces who taught themselves physics by self-reading textbooks.
The Future of Open Education at MIT/HarvardFermi estimation: estimating the rough order of magnitude of an unknown quantity using information that you already know.
advice - nabeelqutheres a certain feeling that theres an explosion of new ability that only a few people realize
Conviction is the Scarcest Resource: Dialogues About ConvictionFour days after our agent’s discovery, a real attacker independently exploited the same flaw and drained approximately $1,000 worth of fees.
