the washer ring oh-shape of time fits us, tilts us well over sky’s edge where, somehow, air sits gentlest. crude, blue mesmero, glistening as fresh silk, —to wet this globe with salt & glee, to unlatch the attic, to undo the sleeve. we finger most the principle fabric.

As the fantastic 2020 Netflix documentary “Disclosure” highlights in harrowing detail, mass media depictions of trans people have long been rooted in monstrosity and the idea of failed womanhood (and manhood).
Opinion | What I Saw in My First 10 Years on Testosterone - The New York Times
Gender, it turns out, is a language, and the more fluent I became in it, the more finding the words to express the messy humanity of myself and others like me became an urgent task — in part because it was becoming increasingly clear that, whether we asked for the job or not, trans people were going to play a key role in shaping the future of gender for everyone.
Opinion | What I Saw in My First 10 Years on Testosterone - The New York Times
The decade since I began my medical transition, it turns out, coincided with another American gender story, largely centered on people who weren’t trans and, yet, playing out beside my own: Lost jobs and a slow recovery from the Great Recession created a shake-up of gender roles in homes and workplaces across the country, leading to what some experts termed a “masculinity crisis” — a widening educational achievement gap between boys and girls, the high rate of male suicides and other “deaths of despair,” and single women dropping out of the marriage market rather than partnering with low-earni…
Opinion | What I Saw in My First 10 Years on Testosterone - The New York Times
That day, as my doctor taught me how to aspirate a syringe, she gently warned me that there was woefully little longitudinal medical research into testosterone and trans men. She couldn’t say for sure whether taking the hormone would affect my life span, but what was left unsaid lingered in the subtext: No matter how long I lived, it would be a lot longer than if I had to manage one more sleepless night, hallucinating a bearded version of myself in my bathroom mirror, mapped over my dead-eyed reflection.
Opinion | What I Saw in My First 10 Years on Testosterone - The New York Times
At my last physical, I’d asked him about trans men and testosterone, and was concerned to discover he knew little more than my initial doctor did 11 years ago. I worry about my future these days, which is new. Transition saved my life, but only now do I realize that I’m entitled to more.

I was also angry — trapped, in what sociologists call the “man box,” the constrictions of masculinity that tightened around me as I attempted, every day, to prove my right to exist. I was unrecognizable — a fact that haunted me in my mother’s dwindling days when, in her confusion, she lost her short-term memory and me along with it.

When he leaves, I remove my mask and see what he didn’t: a man beyond imagining, made manifest and invisible at once.

As we stand side by side to wash our hands, I am aware of the assumptions I make about his body and what he means to do with it. I nod assertively, offering a kind of masculine greeting I learned to cultivate during my first decade on T.

“You only live twice,” my trans friends and I joke, and though we are, of course, referring to the looping quality of our second lives — the visceral experience of another puberty, the work of restaking a place in the world — even this understanding feels reductive to me, as if life can only move forward, the past an artifact to make meaning out of and not an organic constant, braided endlessly into the present. Energy can’t be destroyed. That’s physics. Mom taught me that. A body never disappears. It transforms.

I grew broader and more muscular — becoming the man she birthed but now would not easily recognize.
A Writer Returns to the Grand Canyon, This Time With His Mother’s Ashes - The New York Times
I’ve begun to wonder about the medical miracle of my body, the price I’ll eventually pay for this gift of becoming. I don’t know many trans men older than I am. Will the treatment that saved my life also claim it?

There's a transformation that occurs when you think of Bright Lights, which is that capacity to articulate musical ideas that were not possible before, unless you were either a big, six-member megaband or a prog band, where you had 10-minute long songs, like Sigur Rós, or Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

PAUL BANKS: Carlos suggested the album should be called Celebrated Basslines of the Future. I hope that doesn't get misconstrued, because Carlos is a very funny dude, and part of the joke is how egotistical of a remark that is. But it stayed with me because I'm a huge fan of that guy's work, and later it reminded me that, yeah, basslines should be celebrated, and it is the future.

[Regarding the line "the subway, she is a porno,"] I was in that weird, college-age headspace, and that was one of those ways to make a heavy-handed generalization about an aspect of culture. But explaining these kind of things ruins it, because the point with a lot of them is for listeners to go: "What the fuck does he mean?"

PAUL BANKS: We went to this bar in the East Village and toasted to our imminent record deal. And then it was like, "What's the next step? When can we quit our jobs?" That was Carlos' go-to question: "Can I quit my job yet?" DANIEL KESSLER: To finally have someone say "yes" was a big deal. I would have been excited if we were doing a record with anyone at that point, but I couldn't believe we were doing it with Matador. CARLOS DENGLER: I'll never forget Daniel slapping his hands on the floor, like the giddiest little three-year-old I've ever seen in my entire life.

PAUL BANKS: Well, Carl-- I call him Carl-- was living in my dorm. I had totally eyeballed him because he was walking around in something like a monk's outfit: a skin-tight black shirt and a giant crucifix. I've always been a big fan of eccentric people, so I was like, "I fucking love that dude, he's got balls."

A 2017 ProPublica investigation found that some states were discarding millions in unused medication each year.
Advocates want to recycle CT's wasted prescription drugs. The state says it's already doing that.
A little-known, 20-year-old law mandates that the unused drugs go back to vendor pharmacies, which reimburse the state. The program is saving Connecticut more than a million dollars each year, according to figures from the Department of Social Services, one of the agencies overseeing it.

Their plan seems like a no-brainer: Scoop up millions of dollars in wasted, unexpired drugs from the state’s nursing homes and prisons and re-route them to charity pharmacies that serve uninsured and underinsured residents.

He does not build a marriage bed out of a tree growing in his house (it would be a waste of effort, since he so rarely seems to sleep or have sex).

There is no room in this maximalist film for anything as charmingly mundane and small-scale as Nausicaa’s laundry and her girlish fantasies about a husband. Damon’s grizzled Odysseus is neither a master storyteller nor a flirt.

Similarly, Homer’s Penelope gives the disguised Odysseus a wonderfully vivid account of a dream she has had about some geese in her yard being killed by an eagle; the eagle explained that the geese were her suitors, soon to be slaughtered by her returning husband. But in the dream, Penelope wept – suggesting a fascinatingly ambivalent response to the return of Odysseus and the imminent end to her long period of waiting, like a bride, for a husband. Nolan’s Penelope has no dreams.

Charlize Theron’s Calypso looks gorgeous, but she is never angry, never funny, not skilled in rhetoric, and never consumed by lust for her scraggly mortal victim. She’s an unpaid therapist, soothing the soul of the bedraggled, PTSD-ridden Odysseus with drugs, and graciously listening to his disjointed tale of woe.

Some of the best radically transform or resist the source material, providing what Harold Bloom called ‘strong misreadings’ of their ancestors. The most memorable creative responses to The Odyssey – such as Euripides’ Helen, Virgil’s Aeneid, Milton’s Paradise Lost, Joyce’s Ulysses, Walcott’s Omeros, Atwood’s Penelopiad, Madeline Miller’s Circe or Lisa Peterson’s play set in a modern migrant camp – reconsider the poem’s structure, narrative and values.

The story behind rows of unmarked stones at New Haven cemetery
Her life was marked by occasional misfortunes recorded in the city’s newspapers: her father died during her infancy, and later in life, she was abandoned by her husband, forcing her to place her own children in a orphanage. A run-in with the police in 1891 led her to file a slander lawsuit seeking $5,000 in damages, for which she received just $25.

India stands toe-to-toe with China as a civilizational peer. If anything, from India’s perspective, China owes it a civilizational debt. Buddhism — which transformed Chinese culture, philosophy, art and governance over two millennia — originated in India. “Journey to the West,” one of China’s most beloved literary works, is premised on a Chinese monk’s pilgrimage to India to retrieve Buddhist scriptures. The Monkey King himself, Sun Wukong, makes his journey to what the text calls the “Western Paradise,” which is India.

In China, the specific details have become obscured with the passing of decades. But the residue remains: the Sikh policeman’s red turban, the Parsi merchant’s opium chest, the figure of Ah San. It has all hardened into a lingering perception of the Indian as the Westerner’s willing instrument. A significant strand of Chinese opinion still seems to view India’s international positioning — its partnerships with the United States, its role in the Quad (a diplomatic partnership between India, Australia, Japan and the United States), its balancing act against China — as a continuation of that old …

It was in opium speculation that several of the first great Marwari fortunes were made, including that of Shivnarain Birla, grandfather of G.D. Birla, who became a close associate of Gandhi. A little-known fact in India is that some of the same commercial capital accumulated through the drug trade that devastated China went on to fund the Indian independence movement.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Sikhs were among the most recognizable symbols of the British imperial presence in China. Sikh policemen comprised about 12% of the Shanghai Municipal Police force alongside Europeans and Chinese. From 1885 until the early 1940s, hundreds were recruited directly from Punjab to police the treaty port concessions of Shanghai and Hong Kong. They were cheaper than Europeans and considered more reliable than the local population, and thus inserted into a triangular hierarchy in which they occupied the role of the colonial enforcer’s enforcer.

India and China do not think about each other with equivalent intensity. To China, the U.S. is the only player on the world stage with any real trump cards; the rest of the world, India included, is a supporting cast. It views India as a significant regional actor, a nuclear-armed neighbor, a potential irritant — but not a strategic equal. In contrast, Beijing exerts gravitational force on strategic thinking in New Delhi. It is present in every military procurement decision, every infrastructure project in the border regions, every calculation about Pakistan.
