laissez-faire banking industry tends to be endogenously destabilizing and pro-cyclical, arguing that the need for central banking control was inescapable.
Laissez-fairethe logic of the market inherently produces inequitable outcomes and leads to unequal exchanges
Laissez-faire[t]he increase in population should increase the demand for food, which should increase rents, which should be economically beneficial to the landlords". According to Smith, the landlords should be in favour of policies which contribute to the growth in the wealth of nations, but they often are not in favour of these pro-growth policies because of their own indolence-induced ignorance and intellectual flabbiness.
Laissez-faireThe goal was to ensure that dearly-won political independence was not lost by being economically and financially dependent on the powers and princes of Europe. The creation of a strong central government able to promote science, invention, industry and commerce was seen as an essential means of promoting the general welfare and making the economy of the United States strong enough for them to determine their own destiny.
Laissez-faireIn its application to markets, the principle of laissez-faire holds that markets should naturally be competitive, a rule that the early advocates of laissez-faire always emphasized.
Laissez-faireYou defend your identity to maintain psychological consistency
XThe core intuition is simply that you should be asking more questions.
How to read a book using o1 - Marginal REVOLUTIONMost great things involve paradox. Hold both sides at once. Sit with them. Enjoy the mess. This is life.
Things to Remember - Thoughts + Things from Jackson DahlEveryone has something to offer4. Search for the thing that makes their eyes light up. If you're bored with someone, it's because you haven't asked the right question (Matt Mullenweg).
Things to Remember - Thoughts + Things from Jackson DahlBe forgiving of your past self and generous to your future self. You're on the same team.
Things to Remember - Thoughts + Things from Jackson DahlThis is an amazing algorithm: do interesting things and magically arrive at a complex understanding of the world.
A blog post is a very long and complex search query to find fascinating people and make them route interesting stuff to your inboxThe context is smarter than you. It holds more nuance and information than you can fit in your head. Collaborate with it.
Everything that turned out well in my life followed the same design processA program is written by an individual to be read by another human being, and it’s only incidentally true that computers can execute it
The future belongs to those who prepare like Dwarkesh Patel | MeridianA “Pareto Frontier” describes an optimal state in decision-making processes where you can't improve one aspect without compromising another.
The future belongs to those who prepare like Dwarkesh Patel | MeridianThe Pareto principle, also known as the 80/20 rule, states that 80% of the consequences come from 20% of the causes. (It stems from the Pareto distribution, a power-law probability distribution that describes phenomena across a variety of fields.
The future belongs to those who prepare like Dwarkesh Patel | MeridianThe next time there is an intrusive thought, consider the very fact that your being unable to stop it proves that there is no inner self that controls it.
Eastern philosophy says there is no "self." Science agrees - Big Thinkit's actually quite clear to me there are a lot more good 18:38 ideas for AI businesses than you know people with the skill to work on them at this moment in time
The Near Future of AI [Entire Talk] - Andrew Ng (AI Fund) - YouTubethe outer group becomes a circle, as the plot tries to depict the fact that all its points are about the same distance from the inner group.
How to Use t-SNE Effectivelyt-SNE tends to expand denser regions of data. Since the middles of the clusters have less empty space around them than the ends, the algorithm magnifies them.
How to Use t-SNE EffectivelyReal-world data would probably have multiple clusters with different numbers of elements. There may not be one perplexity value that will capture distances across all clusters—and sadly perplexity is a global parameter.
How to Use t-SNE EffectivelyThe bottom line, however, is that you cannot see relative sizes of clusters in a t-SNE plot.
How to Use t-SNE EffectivelyThe t-SNE algorithm adapts its notion of “distance” to regional density variations in the data set.
How to Use t-SNE EffectivelyIf you see a t-SNE plot with strange “pinched” shapes, chances are the process was stopped too early. Unfortunately, there’s no fixed number of steps that yields a stable result. Different data sets can require different numbers of iterations to converge.
How to Use t-SNE Effectivelythe perplexity really should be smaller than the number of points
How to Use t-SNE EffectivelyChance I is completely impersonal; you can’t influence it. Chance II favors those who have a persistent curiosity about many things coupled with an energetic willingness to experiment and explore. Chance III favors those who have a sufficient background of sound knowledge plus special abilities in observing, remembering, recalling, and quickly forming significant new associations. Chance IV favors those with distinctive, if not eccentric hobbies, personal lifestyles, and motor behaviors.
Pmarchive · Luck and the Entrepreneur: The four kinds of luckA certain [basic] level of action “stirs up the pot”, brings in random ideas that will collide and stick together in fresh combinations, lets chance operate. Motion yields a network of new experiences which, like a sieve, filter best when in constant up-and-down, side-to-side movement...
