How Italy Changed My Body Image - Italy Segreta Lifestyle - Culture
Spending hours at a local bar, fixated on how coffee with real, whole milk and a lightly sweetened pastry was an everyday norm, even more so a ritual and social experience, without a second thought. The pleasure Italians had with each and every bite or each sip from their perfectly frothed cappuccino was palpable

Instead of thinking of pasta as rich in carbs, the voice buzzing in an Italian’s mind thinks how long should it be cooked, which vegetables are in season to compliment the dish, or what is the perfect pairing wine.

Because while there are unbridled pleasures to be had in liberating ourselves from the ideal of thinness, the dark impulses that fetishize restrictive diets and spartan gym regiments are often more familiar and easier to satisfy.
Internet Thin Culture Is Back in 2022
That’s because being thin in 2022 is about being part of a protected class. It’s about looking fit and healthy and rich and virtuous in a time when we’ve all seen what happens if you don’t have wealth or pretty privilege to protect you.

Y2K Aesthetic: Gen Z Is Reviving the 2000s Thin Obsession - FASHION Magazine
Starting from Martha Washington, first ladies have always been at the forefront of the American consciousness, especially when it comes to their fashion. The style of these political wives once served as a tool for merely aiding their husbands’ reputations as high–ranking government officials. But now, as the concept of the “first lady” has modernized, so too has the fashion that comes with it. From wearing chic black leather lace–up boots at inauguration to wearing pieces profiling diverse immigrant designers and designers of color, the style of political spouses has transformed into a powerf…

“Y2K style is largely grounded in thinness,” says Gianluca Russo, columnist and author of The Power of Plus: Inside Fashion’s Size-Inclusivity Revolution. “But it went beyond clothing. Models’ bodies inevitably became an asset in nailing Y2K style. The message was clear: This isn’t for plus-size bodies.” In a 2009 interview about her role in the fashion world, Moss acknowledged her commitment to the look with the statement “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.”

Your AI Therapist Wants You Single - 34th Street Magazine
The optimization that AI promises tricks the mind into perceiving romantic encounters as stepping stones to a more grand, final goal—such as marriage—rather than the desirable experience in and of itself. Flirting becomes deromanticized, seen as a means to an end, and the removal of the human touch creates an unstable foundation on top of which an inauthentic, damned relationship is built.
Your AI Therapist Wants You Single - 34th Street Magazine
Every time we ask an AI to craft our texts, interpret our crush’s behavior, or justify our worst impulses, we let human interaction slip away into something perceived as too difficult to actually experience.

Inspired by the view from his window at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy, in southern France, where the artist spent twelve months in 1889–90 seeking reprieve from his mental illnesses, The Starry Night (made in mid-June) is both an exercise in observation and a clear departure from it.

But whenever you propagate AI output, you're at risk of intentionally or unintentionally legitimizing it with your good name, providing it with a fake proof-of-thought. In some cases, it's fine, because you did think it through and adopted the AI output as your own. But in other cases, it is not, and our scrambler brain feels violated.

“On the Street: Nobody Watches, Everyone Performs” Vivian Gornick’s seminal 1996 essay is titled. I return to this piece every time I question why I’m working for a publication called “34th Street”—through my time here, I’ve come to appreciate the street as the most rudimentary theater of culture, into which we each carry our daily joys and jealousies. “I have to realize the street gives me back a primitive reflection of whatever load of hope or fear I am carrying about with me that day,” Gornick writes.

A little sappy, but here it goes: I always enjoy asking people about their favorite musicians, admittedly somewhat because I’m not very creative with icebreakers. On a long train ride, while stopping for a cup of coffee, even when pausing for breath on a run, you can tell a lot about people by what sounds they choose to fill their lives with. Conversations very rarely have proper rhetorical structure, but somehow every conversation I’ve had about musicians has ended with a call to action: the other person insisting I just have to see them live.
