• Because great art is, in many ways, the solution to the attention economy’s problems. Much of the internet is now optimized for shallow and trivially dopaminergic slop, but perhaps it’s also accentuated the unique value proposition, if you will, of genuine artistic works. Art can hold our attention in a more rewarding way — restoring the capacities that have been degraded by other apps.

Is the Internet Making Culture Worse?—Asterisk

• In coronal planes and parasagittal planes, we image smaller vessels such as lenticulostriate arteries or cortical arteries where the blood flow is much slower (less than 10 cm/s) and a frame rate of 800 Hz is enough to correctly sample the data.

Ultrafast Doppler Reveals the Mapping of Cerebral Vascular Resistivity in Neonates - Charlie Demené, Mathieu Pernot, Valérie Biran, Marianne Alison, Mathias Fink, Olivier Baud, Mickaël Tanter, 2014

• We added a linear spatial interpolation on each track to count one MB detection in every pixel on the MB path.

  The AI Sound House

• Second, since they respond to ultrasound differently over several frames, microbubbles blink separately through the spatiotemporal differentiation process and become temporally separable sources.

Ultrafast ultrasound localization microscopy for deep super-resolution vascular imaging | Nature

• Directivity filters were made for each probe, in both transmit and receive, based on the angular aperture of the probe elements previously studied in Ref. [15]. These filters account for the number of contributing elements at each point of the volume.

• Beliefs and desires are stored in different parts of the brain, and updated in different ways.

In (highly contingent!) defense of interpretability-in-the-loop ML training — AI Alignment Forum

• Only innocence can surmount them, which mere knowledge doesn't even take into account, in those moments when we find ourselves able to listen to things, totally and intensely absorbed in child's play.

  advice

• In our acquisition of knowledge of the Universe (whether mathematical or otherwise) that which renovates the quest is nothing more nor less than complete innocence. It is in this state of complete innocence that we receive everything from the moment of our birth. Although so often the object of our contempt and of our private fears, it is always in us. It alone can unite humility with boldness so as to allow us to penetrate to the heart of things, or allow things to enter us and taken possession of us.

  advice

• The coming generation of AI will complete the turn.

  The Shigalyovist Turn

• Dostoevsky knew better. Shigalyov knew better.

  The Shigalyovist Turn

• Most founders resist this. They want to preserve the culture of the garage, the feeling of unlimited possibility, the flat hierarchy, the sense that everyone is in on the mission.

  The Shigalyovist Turn

• To model transcranial energy loss, an attenuation of 10 dB was applied, corresponding to the double passage of ultrasound through 5 mm of skull bone [32]. The transmitted pressure amplitude was set to 1 MPa, and random noise was added with an equivalent pressure level of 100 Pa [33], as previously described in Ref. [15].

• Instead, their members are faced with permanently recorded versions of the past and its beliefs; and because the past is thus set apart from the present, historical enquiry becomes possible. This in turn encourages scepticism; and scepticism, not only about the legendary past, but about received ideas about the universe as a whole. From here the next step is to see how to build up and to test alternative explanations: and out of this there arose the kind of logical, specialized, and cumulative intellectual tradition of sixth-century Ionia

• In typical 30-µm diameter arterioles, MBs per second are sufficient to provide dynamic fULM without repetition (in single trials). In 10-µm diameter vessels, the required repetitions number is typically n = 10, which remains reasonable for whole-brain imaging.

• Consequently, ULM has not been able to visualize capillaries despite capillaries representing the largest vascular territory of living organisms

Nonlinear sound-sheet microscopy: Imaging opaque organs at the capillary and cellular scale | Science

• However, quantification of the spatial resolution by resolving two nearest small vessels is not an adapted approach as it is very unlikely to track a sufficient number of microbubbles flowing in two extremely close microvessels in the 45-s acquisition time.

Transcranial ultrafast ultrasound localization microscopy of brain vasculature in patients | Nature Biomedical Engineering

• Attenuation is of course also a factor but we can see in Fig. 2d that sensitivity is still good at 110 mm (vessels are visible), while the resolution is degraded (vessels are blurry)

• “Spawning cycle. Field test. How can we know? We’re earthworms, trying to divine the thoughts of astronauts.”

The Twenty-One Second God - Lightspeed Magazine

• “You wanted to know how it made me feel. You have to know this before you can know that. Because once the arm is gone, everything just goes gray. You’re not connected to the universe; you’re not even really connected to your own body. You just—exist.

The Twenty-One Second God - Lightspeed Magazine

• I try again. “You know how, when you close your eyes, you still know where all your parts are? You just know, without looking, where you end and everything else begins?” He nods. “Imagine that you knew, in the exact same way, that you went on forever. That everything else was as much a part of you as your arms and legs.”

The Twenty-One Second God - Lightspeed Magazine

• In the meantime, someone snuck in through the back door. Someone disabled the lag and unleashed a globe-spanning corpus callosum that connected fifteen million brains as intimately as the hemispheres in one connect to each other. There was no we in those moments, any more than there are two people in my head right now. There was only the Twenty-One Second God. The rest is history.

The Twenty-One Second God - Lightspeed Magazine

• Thanks to you I know that when you anesthetize half a brain, the other half might manifest a whole new personality. I know that when the drugs wear off, that short-lived persona—that standalone, autonomous being—gets swallowed back into the greater whole

The Twenty-One Second God - Lightspeed Magazine

• Ask the pianist, mid-concerto, to think about what their fingers are doing. Ask the martial artist which muscles are moving in which order, why they feinted left instead of right. Once the knowledge has been assimilated, being aware of it only destroys the performance.

The Twenty-One Second God - Lightspeed Magazine

• Of course, that’s hardly unusual; you always delighted in pointing out that most of our thoughts are unconscious even at the best of times.

The Twenty-One Second God - Lightspeed Magazine

• Those assimilated later were never more than whispers in a hurricane: they remember as much as a single neuron might, if you ripped it from someone’s head and demanded to know what the brain was thinking.

• Although 2D piezoelectric matrix array transducers are emerging for volumetric imaging, they are hampered by low individual element sensitivity compared to conventional one-dimensional linear probes, or by their integrated sequential pre-beamforming required to lower data transfer rate from the probe to the scanner.

Functional ultrasound localization microscopy reveals brain-wide neurovascular activity on a microscopic scale | Nature Methods

• In a smaller vessel, for a typical pixel such as δ in Fig. 1e located within a first-order branch of a penetrating arteriole, the signal is sparse as the flow is too small to derive a MB detection probability >1 every 5 s; however, the detection of individual MBs occurs mainly during stimulation.

• Yet, MB displacements are driven by cerebrovascular perfusion, resulting in long acquisition times for obtaining a detailed map of the microvasculature30: sensitivity to microscopic vessels (~5–10 µm) comes at the cost of extensive acquisition times (~minutes).

• We rather show that the relative CBV increase is not correlated with MB speed. This suggests that Doppler-based filtering of low velocities based on sub-spectrum Power Doppler filtering is not be sufficient to extract the complexity of the neurovascular response in particular the discrepancy of relative neurovascular response in arterioles and smaller capillary vessels. The limited 100 µm resolution of fUS imaging is to date not sufficient to separate each vascular compartment. In particular the slow flow near the arteriole vessel walls can simply not be separated from slow flow in capillaries

• For sample structures that are smaller than 𝐿 𝐴 , that is, 𝐿 𝐴 >> 𝐿 𝐶 , the acoustic field experiences an effective homogeneous medium and the response will, therefore, depend on the average elastic properties of the constituents within this length scale, and thus cannot be resolved individually
