I’m turned off when people are motivated primarily by prestige, but many great works have been produced at the altar of social status.

TELL ME, DO YOU INTEND TO FUCK IT? | Dirty FurnitureDrinking and smoking are suboptimal; the fish were trying to reach a Pareto-efficient means of having a good time.
Numb at Burning Man - Numb at the LodgeAcross the parking lot was a smoke shop where we picked up an AI-enabled Chinese vape. The vape constantly monitors your conversations to pick up clues about your personality; then, when you hit it, a screen on the side lights up with an animation of a Confucian sage who either praises your enormous vapour cloud or mocks your limited lung capacity.
Numb at Burning Man - Numb at the LodgeWe need to ban the word ‘agency.’ I’m a dog.
Child’s Play, by Sam Krissgreat relationships are harder to compress into a sensible string of words
Looking for Alice - by Henrik Karlsson - Escaping FlatlandIf you want to prompt someone to be authentic and playful and generative, you usually just need to ask them something where they have a rich experience to pull from but have never pulled an answer from that experience before.
Looking for Alice - by Henrik Karlsson - Escaping FlatlandThat is perhaps the most solid dating advice I have, by the way—show the inside of your head in public, so people can see if they would like to live in there.
Looking for Alice - by Henrik Karlsson - Escaping FlatlandBut hers is the right attitude: you do not like a category. You like individuals.
Looking for Alice - by Henrik Karlsson - Escaping FlatlandIf you are 100 percent credulous, everything ever made is art. If you are 100 percent cynical, everything ever made is advertising
31. Gabe Whaley - Playing the Crowd & Outlasting the Hype - Jackson Dahlit's got a slap in one sentence. It's got a slap harder in three.
31. Gabe Whaley - Playing the Crowd & Outlasting the Hype - Jackson Dahla party's quality is correlated with how hard it is to get there. The reason Burning Man works is it's just super hard to get there.

31. Gabe Whaley - Playing the Crowd & Outlasting the Hype - Jackson DahlYou are roughly as happy as you decide to be today.
James Clear on X: "If your past achievements didn't make you meaningfully happier, don't expect your future achievements to make you happier. Remember that thing you so badly wanted? If getting it didn't meaningfully change your long-term happiness, then you shouldn't expect the thing you want" / XOf course my adult mind wanders to all the other things we could be doing. But I let it go, and return to that present focus.

Thank you for being annoying - by Adam Mastroiannion the one hand, it burns, but on the other hand, I kinda like how it burns.
Thank you for being annoying - by Adam MastroianniIt’s possible for someone to have a motivational system very different from your own and still be a force for good in the world. I’m turned off when people are motivated primarily by prestige, but many great works have been produced at the altar of social status.

On Turning Writing Community, Writing Habits, and Submitting Work Into A LifeAnd by this I mean that if you have the feeling of winning a golden ticket that will save you when you get into the program, you are in danger. You are already giving that institution too much power. You will save you, as it were.
On Turning Writing Community, Writing Habits, and Submitting Work Into A LifePeople often want the parts of you that benefit them without including the parts of you that are important to you. This may seem harmless but it causes you to fracture yourself and damages your self-esteem more than you realise at the time.
Things I Have Learned From Being in Unhealthy ConnectionI think what Bourdain’s struggle comes down to is finding meaning every day. It’s the easiest thing in the world to let each day go by filled with nothing but obligations and short term stimulation.

28 slightly rude notes on writing - by Adam MastroianniThere’s something special about every word written by a human because they chose to do this thing instead of anything else.
28 slightly rude notes on writing - by Adam MastroianniIf I let a day go by without writing, I grow uneasy. Two days and I am in a tremor. Three and I suspect lunacy. Four and I might as well be a hog suffering the flux in a wallow. An hour’s writing is tonic
28 slightly rude notes on writing - by Adam MastroianniI was focused on a superficial level, looking for friends who shared my interests, instead of paying attention to the deeper structure of their personality: the way they process the world, their values, and virtues.

Advice on Upskilling - Justin SkycakOr try and fail enough times to gain some humility. Your missing foundations don’t care. They’ll wait for you patiently until you’re ready to acknowledge them
Advice on Upskilling - Justin SkycakIf you’re struggling to stick with demanding forms of practice, then temporarily forget about efficiency and just build a habit with some less effective but more enjoyable form of practice.

no exit - by Ava - bookbear expressnotice the feeling of agency, to notice the fact that you can do what you put your mind to even when default human psychology is stacked against you.
Enjoying the feeling of agencyNotice and enjoy the fact that you can do things that are traditionally hard for humans, when you put your mind to it. If you focus on this good feeling, you can train your subconscious to enjoy opportunities to demonstrate agency, and this is a solid first stride on the path to becoming more agentic.
Enjoying the feeling of agencyYou love to work. That hasn’t changed. Something else needs to.
Questions to ask when I don't want to work · eieio.gamesThis is a good plan for life in general. If you have two choices, choose the harder. If you're trying to decide whether to go out running or sit home and watch TV, go running. Probably the reason this trick works so well is that when you have two choices and one is harder, the only reason you're even considering the other is laziness. You know in the back of your mind what's the right thing to do, and this trick merely forces you to acknowledge it.
How to Make WealthYou have to understand the shape of real work, see clearly what kind you're best suited for, aim as close to the true core of it as you can, accurately judge at each moment both what you're capable of and how you're doing, and put in as many hours each day as you can without harming the quality of the result.
How to Work HardIt’s almost like a form of prayer: you offer up what you can even though the reward is uncertain. You do it out of love.
effort - by Ava - bookbear expressSomeone who takes an undemanding job because it affords him the time to pursue other interests and activities is considered a flake
Calvin and Hobbes at Martijn's - Bill WattersonSelling out is usually more a matter of buying in. Sell out, and you're really buying into someone else's system of values, rules and rewards.
Calvin and Hobbes at Martijn's - Bill Wattersonwhere things were done out of some inexplicable inner imperative
Calvin and Hobbes at Martijn's - Bill WattersonOnce you’ve articulated your own story, you can hit “inspect element” on it, edit it, modify it. I don’t mean “make up false details about your life” – rather, I’m suggesting that experiment with what you choose to focus on, and how you choose to frame it.
write your memoirs - @visakanv's blog“Most people have done all that they’re ever going to do. They raise a family, they earn a living and then they die. Most people don’t work on their dreams; why? One is because of fear — the fear of failure. What if things don’t work out? And the fear of success: What if they do and I can’t handle it? Most people get comfortable. They stop growing, they stop working on themselves, they stop stretching. They stop pushing themselves and they end up becoming very cynical about life and they throw in the towel on themselves, on their families and on their dreams.”
Most People - @visakanv's blogThat brings me to the paramount rule of this system: when in doubt, go to bed.
